Drink a cup of green tea and lemon juice with a bit of sugar, and voila! – you have yourself a superfood drink to arm yourself for better health!

Purdue University did a study on green tea and lemon. They found that adding ascorbic acid (Vitamin C) and sucrose (sugar) to green tea can help the body absorb helpful compounds called catechins 3 times faster by intestinal cells and entering the bloodstream. Hmmm…

So maybe now you’re thinking, what the heck is a catechin? I know I was when I first heard this… Catechins (a class of polyphenols commonly found in tea, cocoa and grapes) are beneficial natural antioxidants. These antioxidants work to protect our body’s cells from the effects of harmful free radicals.

Free radicals are highly reactive molecules that damage cell membranes and destroy DNA –yikes! They are a root cause of many chronic and degenerative diseases.

Consequently, the catechins in green tea slow the production of free radicals, the primary culprit that triggers cardiovascular diseases, preventing the development of heart disease. Scientists believe, too, that catechins can reduce the risk of stroke, cancer and diabetes. Wow – all this from a cup of tea!

“There is a lot of interest in bioactive materials to protect people from disease and promote better health,” says Connie Weaver, head of the National Institutes of Health Purdue University-University of Alabama at Birmingham Botanical Research Center for Age-Related Diseases, which funded the study.

“What’s been totally ignored is the way these materials are found in foods in combination [like green tea and lemon] with other ingredients,” she adds.

I like what Connie Weaver is talking about here. Eating healthy food is obviously good for us. But if scientists can find ways for us to get more nutrition from our food by simply pairing specific kinds  together, I’m all for it!

I hope they keep up with this research on superfood combinations like green tea and lemon! In the meantime, Randy and I will keep searching for better ways for all of us to get the most from our food.

Here’s to the hunt 😉
