Okay, you caught me slacking. I was going to update my post-holiday natural weight loss progress every week, but I got thoroughly sidetracked with a couple projects and family stuff so writing took a backseat. However, that doesn’t mean I haven’t been working on my goals. I’ve actually made good progress. Not as much as I had planned, but progress just the same.

My Natural Weight Loss Goals Were

  • 50 push-ups in 2 minutes, then 100 pushups without stopping
  • 50 sit ups in 2 minutes, then 100 sit ups without stopping
  • Run 5 miles in under 40 minutes
  • Jump rope for 15 minutes straight
  • Yoga every day for 30 minutes
  • Lose 15 lbs (from 210lbs to 195lbs)
  • Change body composition (from 18.2% to 16.0% body fat)

I got my 5 mile run down to just under 40 minutes and made it up to my 50 push-ups, but in about 3 minutes. I haven’t worked on the yoga and sit-ups as much as I should, but I’m almost to my goal weight. I’m sitting at about 198 right now and 17% body fat. Need to do a bit more strength training to get that where I want it, and we’ll be in good shape.

I’m still surprised at how much easier it is for me to lose and maintain weight now with natural weight loss method than it was when I first started getting in shape. It seems to be due to one major factor that I have seen change in me over the years. It is seldom talked about and only in passing when it is, but it’s by far THE most important aspect for keeping that weight off for good.

If you change your mind you can change your life!

One of the most effective natural weight loss methods. You can change your diet, you can change your habits, and you can even go so far as to change where you live, but if you don’t change your mind your changes will always be short lived at best.

When I was a 300 lbs. plus guy, I was a “big guy” who ate big and that’s who I was. It’s how I saw myself and it’s how everyone else saw and treated me. Now though, after years of living healthy I have a different self-image and those around me are surprised to hear that I was ever that big.

Because of this, it’s much easier now to stay slim because I’m just being the person that I see myself as. If I still thought of myself as that “big guy” I would still be struggling to maintain a healthy weight. Eventually, I would run out of will power, fail and go back to what my mind believes I should be.

The good news is that you don’t have to learn this by accident over the course of years. There are countless books that explain this phenomenon. From ancient religious writing to the modern self-help gurus, they all talk about the power of your own mind over your body and the influence of your thoughts on your life. The key point is, you are doing it in all natural weight loss way.

The details may vary, but they all share a common theme that can be summed up with the idea that everything in the universe is made up of energy including our bodies and our thoughts. Therefore, it stands to reason that we can control our bodies and change our lives by changing our thoughts. Or in other words…

We are what we think about!

Luckily, for every theory about this concept there is an accompanying method for taking control of it and harnessing its power to your advantage. Call it prayer, meditation, hypnosis, subconscious programming or whatever, but they all point to the fact that deep focused thought can literally change your life in any direction you desire.

There are volumes upon volumes for you to study on the power of the mind and methods for using it to get what you want. Countless people have achieved amazing things by doing so, but in the meantime here are a couple small things you can do to change your situation right now.

Stay Positive

It’s hard at first, but you must deliberately control your thoughts to drive out negative thoughts and emotions. Yeah, I know. It’s not always possible especially when someone does something amazingly stupid or says something incredibly insensitive. The last thing you do is have a positive thought…

You have to be persistent though, especially with thoughts of failure. Keep a list of things that make your happy and reasons that you will succeed. Keep it close and read it when you need it. If you just can’t snap that funk, stop what you’re doing and take a couple minutes to make yourself happy again.

Personally, I like to go to stumbleupon and stumble the humor section (okay okay, adult humor) section for five minutes. Find something similar for yourself that you can use for a quick attitude adjustment.

Some days just suck too much and you end up stuck in that funk all day, but keep with it. The more you do it, the easier it gets and the fewer and fewer those crappy days will become.


This is a bit easier than the first natural weight loss method. The catch is that you have to actually do it and do it regularly. It’s easier because it’s planned and requires less will power, but it’s still takes a good deal of persistence and focus to work.

There are tons of studies done on professional athletes, politicians, executives, etc… as to the effectiveness of visualizing. It works wonders for those trying to achieve at the highest levels and will work just as well for conquering more “everyday” issues.

The basic idea is that your mind will take you where you tell it, so picture where you want to go. Don’t dwell on where you are or where you don’t want to be or that is the picture that will be most prominent in your brain. Your mind will think that is where you want to be and take you there.

The vast majority of us are brought up thinking the exact opposite of how we should think which why we so easily get caught in a rut. We think “I don’t want to be fat anymore” or “I don’t want all this debt anymore” but by focusing our thoughts and energy on those negatives they are what we end up attracting that into our lives. Don’t worry though, it’s fairly easy to change.

First, you need to define what you want… clearly. Not just “I want to be thinner” or “I need to lose weight”. You need to define how much you want to weight or what size dress you want to fit into or whatever…be precise.

It’s pretty damned hard to visualize something that’s vague so make it clear. Don’t just pick the dress or shirt size. Pick the actual dress or shirt, the color, the material, where you will where it, how you will feel with it on.

Now with those details draw a picture in your mind and set aside time each day to visualize it. There are lots of methods, but you can just simply sit quietly and meditate on the picture that you’ve created.

Picture tucking in your tight fitting t-shirt and how you will look with your flat stomach and broad round shoulders. Visualize how good you will feel going out in your little black dress. Paint every detail in your head from where you will go to what people will say to you.

It might feel silly at first, but stick with it. As you get better at it you will begin to believe what you are seeing and what was once mere fantasizing will become visualizing and as long as you take action, you vision will become reality.

You can use this to help facilitate the first part of staying positive too, they work really well together. Any time during the day that you catch yourself thinking negatively of yourself or doubting your ability, just pull up your mental picture and use it to drive out the bad image.

I know that sounds hokey, but it’s friggin true so just take my word for it and do it! LOL. Whether you’re trying to achieve some natural weight loss, learn some new challenging subject, change a stubborn habit or even get a new job, your success will be almost guaranteed if you can bend your mind to that end.

This is one of the oldest ideas in the world and you can apply to any situation in your life. I’m just pointing out that it will help you immensely in your natural weight loss efforts.
