Looking for some healthy alternatives to add to your grocery list? We may have just the right list for for you…
Randy and I were out grocery shopping today, and I realized I had forgotten my grocery list… Ohhh I hate it when I do that! This led me to think it would be nice to make a grocery list for all of us here at health-actually. When Randy and I started out, it took us a while to read labels searching for healthy alternatives to our regular food staples. We developed our list over several weeks. Hopefully, this list can get you all started out a bit easier saving you some time, and fat and calories to boot!
Your body burns calories all day no matter what you are doing. It needs energy to maintain itself and run your vital systems. So your Base Metabolic Rate (BMR) is the number of calories it would take to run your body all day while laying on your bed doing nothing. There’s a lot more awesome geeky information on it at Wikipedia BMR so I won’t go into a bunch more detail here.
The calculator on this page does the BMR calculation and also asks for your normal activity level. It multiplies by a corresponding factor to give you and idea of how many calories you need to consume in order to run your body without gaining or losing any weight.
I was all set to write today’s blog, until I saw a headline reviewing The 17 Day Diet. Rrrrrrt! Change of plan… Once again, leading doctors and nutritionists have spoken: successful weight loss should be based on eating healthy foods in reasonable portions; limiting sugars, alcohol, and refined starches; and getting plenty of exercise. In their expert eyes, The 17 Day Diet falls short in its beginning by requiring limits and restrictions on certain fruits and vegetables.
Thank you experts! Randy and I, both, tried the 17 Day Diet and couldn’t agree more. Truly, the above medical advice is the base line we follow for our good health. Oh, we have tried a few diet trends. But in the end we always agree, “Let’s just stick to eating healthy and exercising.”
I spent the next 6 weeks nursing a crushed vertebra. For my spine, lumbar 2 is permanently crushed and looks like a perfect bow-tie in all my x-rays. From then on, I was weakened. I was so, so stupid. But…you can’t change the past, so…time to start workin on the future.
I followed my doctor’s instructions. When I didn’t, my mother took over (when mom means business, everybody listens). I strengthened my core, kept my weight in check, and got plenty of exercise.
For a while, I did alright and had only short pain flare ups. I was able to keep an active life which is crucial for me to be me. 😉 Then, it happened again…
